LYSA KARELL Figurative oil painter and portrait artist specialising in sacred and classical art

Lysa Karell

Figurative practice and exploration of the visible, between observation and thought.

THE ARTIST

Lysa Karell is a figurative painter, portrait artist, illustrator and essayist whose practice stands within the continuity of Renaissance workshops, where the discipline of drawing supports the development of painting.

Her work revolves around sacred painting, Symbolist realism, Christian iconography, mythology and portraiture. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the Baroque period and certain Pre-Raphaelite movements, she explores the relationships between light, presence, idealised beauty and sacred thought.

Oil painting occupies a central place in her artistic path, alongside graphite, black chalk, charcoal and pastel. Her interest in materiality, composition, volume and anatomical representation informs an approach guided by precision of gesture and depth of subject.

Her practice is rooted in the study of the Old Masters and in a constant search for balance between technical mastery, sensitivity and evocative power. The face, expression and quality of presence remain essential elements of her work, in which each piece seeks to move beyond simple resemblance in order to reach a more inward and deeply embodied dimension.

The Catholic faith occupies an important place in the evolution of her work. Christ, Biblical figures, saints and Christian iconography nourish a body of research centred on sacred painting and the great traditions devoted to the representation of the divine.

She also carries the heritage of Irish and Franco-German roots, as well as an ancient Indigenous ancestry connected to the First Nations of North America, a convergence of cultures and memories that shapes her artistic sensitivity through her relationship to nature, the memory of territories and a profound attachment to the living world.

HUMAN PORTRAITURE

For Lysa Karell, portraiture extends beyond resemblance alone. It is grounded in a careful search for presence, balance and human intensity.

Each work develops slowly through the study of proportions, light, flesh tones, textures and the subject’s individual character. Attention to detail remains essential, yet never to the point of imprisoning the portrait within rigid or purely photographic reproduction.

Certain nuances may be intentionally reinterpreted in order to preserve the emotional strength of the whole: a broader movement within the hair, a more enveloping light, a slightly heightened expression or an atmosphere closer to the sensation experienced before the sitter.

Above all, this approach seeks to bring forth a credible, sensitive and deeply inhabited presence, where technical mastery remains at the service of the portrait’s inner life.

ANIMAL PORTRAITURE

Animal portraiture occupies an important place in Lysa Karell’s journey and reflects her interest in the observation of living beings and anatomical study.

Through pastel, graphite and oil painting, she creates realistic animal portraits with particular attention given to volume, light, expression and the rendering of fur.

This practice developed over the years alongside the presence of Daividh Gilmour, a Shetland Sheepdog with striking heterochromia who became a central companion in the artist’s life. The name Daividh, written in Scottish Gaelic, evokes at once David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, King David from Biblical tradition and Michelangelo’s David, bringing together three important influences within Lysa Karell’s universe: music, faith and harmony of form.

Daividh’s presence naturally led the artist towards animal portraiture and allowed her to build an important clientele within this field over time. Although this practice remains part of her work today, it now occupies a more occasional place in order to leave greater space for large-scale oil painting projects.

INFLUENCES

Sandro Botticelli remains the founding influence of Lysa Karell’s artistic universe. The linear grace of the Florentine Renaissance, the balance of composition and the expressive power of human presence remain central to her artistic vision.

Around this lineage gravitate several masters who shaped her eye: Fra Angelico for sacred light, Caravaggio for the power of chiaroscuro, Leonardo da Vinci for anatomical study and the construction of form, Albrecht Dürer for the rigour of drawing, Alexandre Cabanel for the nobility of portraiture, Gustave Moreau for the evocative dimension of painting, and Alphonse Mucha for ornamental elegance and the stylisation of silhouettes.

The Baroque period also exerts a significant influence upon her artistic research, particularly through the treatment of light, the intensity of compositions and the dialogue between darkness and revelation. The Pre-Raphaelite movement, meanwhile, nourishes her interest in idealised faces, antique themes, visual poetry and the aesthetic language of the great nineteenth-century masterpieces.

Alongside these influences stand more contemporary references: Walt Disney for the vitality of drawing, Tim Burton for his stylised Gothic universe and Charles Addams for the dark elegance of composition.

Her artistic vision also draws from Mediterranean cultures, ancient sculpture, sacred iconography, maritime legends and traditions in which death becomes passage, continuity and transformation.

EDUCATION

Lysa Karell’s practice was shaped through both academic learning and self-directed exploration.

Her training in drawing and painting developed alongside Canadian, American, French, Lebanese, British, Brazilian and Cartagena-based instructors, strengthening her understanding of tonal values and classical pictorial techniques.

Additional studies in art history undertaken through Sorbonne Université in Paris and UQAM in Montréal nourished an approach to representation that is at once historical, cultural and theoretical. Her background also includes specialised training completed through the RMN–Grand Palais and the Centre Pompidou.

Convinced that artistic knowledge develops over an entire lifetime, Lysa Karell continually pursues her evolution through further study and the deepening of the great foundations of pictorial disciplines.

Her current research places particular importance upon the study of sacred imagery, Christian traditions and theological thought applied to art, with special attention devoted to major representations of Christ, Biblical narratives and the aesthetic codes that shaped devotional painting throughout the centuries.

LA BOTTEGA DEL VENTO

Inspired by the Italian workshops of the Renaissance, La Bottega Del Vento brings together anatomical observation, mastery of tonal values, composition and historical techniques.

Within this space, Lysa Karell develops her portraits, compositions, studies and research related to the representation of the human body and the great principles of representational art. She has also taught there, transmitting precision of observation, understanding of volume and the foundations of workshop methods.

Today, La Bottega Del Vento remains a place devoted to learning, refinement and the technical demands of representational arts.

ATROPA PARCAE · DEL VENTO · GRAND GALLERY

Born from La Bottega Del Vento, Atropa Parcae is a minimalist online art boutique bringing together art editions, illustrations, prints and creations inspired by mythology, the sacred, classic cinema, vintage animation and major literary works. Conceived as a more accessible extension of Lysa Karell’s work, the platform allows the public to acquire artistic creations and fine art prints at more approachable prices than original works and limited editions of her paintings.

The name Atropa Parcae evokes the figures of fate found within antique traditions, painting and great narrative works.

Today, the direction of Atropa Parcae evolves towards a stronger presence of period engravings, Christian iconography and line art inspired by historical art forms and monumental frescoes.

Certain creations also draw from various spiritual traditions, beliefs and representations of the divine originating from cultures across the world, through an approach founded upon respect, openness and a genuine interest in the great aesthetic heritages of humanity.

Although deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition, Atropa Parcae remains open to the many ways civilisations have represented the divine, foundational narratives and holy figures throughout art. Black and white, contrast and historical references occupy a central place within its visual language.

Conceived as a freer space within Lysa Karell’s artistic path, Atropa Parcae also allows for the exploration of a more spontaneous and accessible form of creation, balanced against the physical, mental and technical demands required by long-form works.

Del Vento Grand Gallery acts as a bridge between traditional creation and contemporary diffusion, with the intention of preserving the quality and aesthetic coherence of the works presented.

THE LAST VENUS

La Dernière Vénus is the educational space developed by Lysa Karell around the Old Masters and the great traditions of painting.

Inspired by the figure of Simonetta Vespucci, this project extends the mini-classes already shared by the artist across social media through a dedicated space focused on major works, important artistic movements, remarkable figures and the intellectual foundations that shaped artistic creation.

Designed as publicly accessible learning journeys, these mini-classes explore a work, a master, a period or a specific theme through the observation of composition, sacred references, antique narratives, philosophical influences and aesthetic principles that continue to resonate across centuries.

La Dernière Vénus offers an approach that is both demanding and accessible, with the intention of transmitting this knowledge with clarity and depth. Each study seeks to reveal what great works of art still communicate today through composition, thought, faith, myth and human representation.

FROM SHAKESPEARE TO SENÉCAL

From Shakespeare to Senécal constitutes the literary and analytical dimension of Lysa Karell’s work.

This publication brings together chronicles, essays, literary notes and analyses devoted to both classical and contemporary works.

Through a structured approach combining literature, philosophy, mythology, psychology, history and theology, each text seeks to understand how figures, themes and narratives contribute to the intellectual construction of literary works.

The Symbolic Analyses focus upon archetypes, Biblical figures, mythological narratives and representations of the sacred. The Literary Essays develop an in-depth reflection on authors, historical contexts and systems of thought present within texts. The Chronicles and Literary Notes, meanwhile, offer a careful reading of composition, language and the internal organisation of works.

This approach considers literature as a territory of interpretation in which motifs, figures and narratives reveal broader intellectual, historical and philosophical inheritances.

COMMITMENTS

The art of Lysa Karell is rooted in a commitment to respect, transmission and responsibility.

Sensitive to biodiversity, animal welfare and human dignity, she notably supports WWF-Canada as well as organisations dedicated to helping women and children living in precarious situations.

As part of her artistic and philanthropic commitments, Lysa Karell develops hundreds of illustrations intended for young patients at Sainte-Justine Hospital, in tribute to their resilience and courage.

L'artiste a le pouvoir de réveiller la force d'agir qui sommeille dans d'autres âmes.

Friedrich Nietzsche
